When I’m not being a Wedding Photojournalist: Rock Climbing Competition: PRG Winter Burn 2011

My last post was a segue into another area of photography that I love to capture.  I used to compete in rock climbing competitions but then found I had more fun when I could document all the action.  The winter always brings lots of comps as it is a time for training in the gym due to the rarity of going outside with the weather being so unruly.  The first one of the new year in our area was held at a climbing gym in Valley Township, PA called PRG Climbing Center on February 15.

Now, having participated in many a comp, it’s no ordinary day of climbing.  In a comp you go big or you go home empty-handed.  The cool thing about it though is the atmosphere of it all.  Just because it’s a competition doesn’t mean every man/woman/child for themselves.  Climbers are very generous souls when it comes to sharing “beta” or knowledge of how to complete a climb.  Finishing a climb is contagious.  The crowd gets psyched and then magical things begin to happen.  It really is such a cool thing to see it through a lens and capture it for everyone to relive later.    It’s also great when so many take a moment to thank me for donating my time.  It means all the world to know that they are appreciative and it keeps me doing what I do.

Here are a bunch of my favorites from the day.  If you want to see lots more I have uploaded them to a gallery at:
