Wedding Photojournalism: Laura and Bill at the Barn on Bridge, Collegeville Wedding, November 9, 2013

The last days of fall were near but held on just long enough for Laura and Bill’s outdoor tented wedding ceremony at the Barn On Bridge. Laura and Bill had a first look in the carriage house where Laura and her girls were getting ready. It is always a special moment when the bride and groom see each other for the first time. I am partial to a first look as my husband and I elected to have this more intimate moment on our wedding day. I find the first look to be much less formal and allow the couple to be more relaxed and less nervous for their ceremony. An advantage to the first look is that all the family portraits and formals can be done before the ceremony, leaving the couple more time to spend with family and friends at the reception since they can go directly to cocktail hour.

Weddings are very emotional days and as a documentary wedding photographer I have to concentrate on capturing as many emotional and real moments as I can.  Every wedding I shoot I am reliving my own wedding over in my mind. I feel those emotions and so it can be difficult to not get swept up and forget to keep snapping that shutter when the eyes start to well up. Every father and daughter dance gets me.  I think of my own day and wish I had that moment with my dad.  I think to the future when I will witness my husband twirling our now 9 week old daughter, Zoey, around on her big day.

The most emotional part of Laura and Bill’s day was when Bill pulled out his guitar, grabbed the microphone and sang to Laura. Not only did he sing to her but he played an original piece he had written especially for her on their wedding day.  I do karaoke once in awhile but I can’t think of a more nerve wracking moment than performing at your own wedding reception.  Bill was fantastic and kept his cool the entire way through. I was in awe but somehow managed to keep documenting even though I was getting all misty eyed.

I thought i would choose an excerpt to share from this piece but its all beautiful and needs to be appreciated in its entirety. Here are the lyrics from Bill’s song:

“On a summer night, all alone,
I was going to meet my true love.
But I didn’t know that yet.

Just a normal night, till she entered the room – the bride before her groom.
This blue-eyed, gold-haired queen of my dreams was placed here just for me.

Now when I look back, I recall
How my heart did beat so rapidly
The first time our eyes did meet.

Love can do that to ya.
Sing hallelujah,
‘Cause I always knew you were the one
Who would say I do
Love you too.
You know that’s all true.
I wrote this for you.
My love. My Laura…

I love you more than words do justice. It’s just us. Forever.”

Here are the images that will forever be a happy reminder of that which is true love.

A huge thank you to my awesome second shooter, Gretchen Johnson.  She allows me to do what I do best and fills in the gaps with images I would literally have to be in two places at once to capture.  She also is an excellent people person, very energetic and has a passion to get amazing images for my clients.  Without her the coverage would be incomplete.
