Wedding Photojournalism: Jessica + Matthew’s Delaware Winter Wedding at Our Lady of Fatima and Hilton Christiana

Jessica and Matt are two of the sweetest people I know.  It isn’t a surprise since they come from two of the sweetest moms I have ever met.  You know it’s going to be an awesome experience all around when mom offers up her daughter’s vacant room, if my family ever needed a place to stay.  Truthfully, I knew it way before that moment anyways.  Jessica is the little sister of Angie, whom i had the pleasure of capturing her wedding to Ryan back in October of 2012.  (Check out their fall wedding at Our Lady of Fatima and the Mendenhall HERE).  Following their wedding the family was all a buzz with talk of Jessica and Matthew’s possible engagement.  It wasn’t but a little over a month later that Matthew would propose at Longwood Gardens, one of their favorite places to spend time with one another.

We spent a bit of time together in the spring of 2013 when we had a little adventure around their beloved Longwood Gardens.  If you missed their engagement session make sure and go back and take a look HERE.  It is one of my favorite sessions to date as the location is just filled with so many creative possibilities.  I love showing a great deal of depth in my images and find shooting through trees, flowers, natural elements make for the most interesting images.  Engaged couple seen through leaves at Longwood Gardens Kennett Square, PA - Engagement Photography by Danielle Vennard Photographer - In Pursuit of Moments Unrehearsed - daniellevennard.comThe composition and use of framing with out of focus foreground will direct the viewer’s eye right to the main subjects, the couple.  It also satisfies my need to create images with real moments and emotions by allowing me to disappear and give couples a space to interact without having a big lens up in their face.

From the beginning Jessica had mentioned a winter wedding and moss…yeah that green stuff that grows on trees…oh and i can’t forget Sasquatch…aka Big Foot.  I recall them telling me that one of their guilty pleasures was watching the documentary, Finding BigFoot, together.  I was intrigued to see how all these elements of their vision would come together on their big day, February 28, 2014.

I always aim to be in the background and just the observer for the wedding day.  With these families it was tough.  They made me feel like I was just as special and a part of the day as their family and friends.  Knowing that I was about a month and a half away from delivering my second child, Zoey, they made sure I was feeling alright (and eating and drinking enough).  I am floored by that kind of compassion and love from people who hired me to do a job.  I am forever grateful for their kindness.

Here are a ton of favorites from their big day:

Their wedding day was definitely a chilly one.  The guys had no worries with the many layers they had on and the girls made sure to have their wraps and gloves for extra warmth.  Jessica added a short fur coat to her long dress and her very unique pair of shoes, bedazzled by her of course (pictured above).  Pockets on a dress?  Yes please 🙂  I don’t usually show the straight forward portrait images but it is important to note that these are still a part of the day even though I primarily shoot in a photojournalistic or documentary style.

Their ceremony was held at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in New Castle, DE.  I had photographed her sister’s wedding here before and already had a vision of what the images might be but Jessica and Matt’s ceremony was a bit different giving way to opportunities for capturing images that were much different from her sisters.  I was excited to see the ring bearer, Robert, as he was just a wee little smasher (as Grandma Vennard would say 🙂 ) at Angie and Ryan’s wedding (pictured with his Mom, Laura).  Now he looks like a little gentleman complete with his drivers cap.

Their reception took place at the Hilton Christiana (incidentally right next to the hospital I was to deliver in).  I was a little nervous about how their bridal portraits were going to turn out seeing as it was already night-time when the ceremony ended.  The courtyard with its excellent arrangement of old style street lamps was a really fun space to work with.  Jessica and Matthew braved the cold long enough for me to get some of my favorite images of the day.

It was a relief to get out of the frosty air and into the toasty, purple up-lit ballroom.  I couldn’t wait to see the decor and was pleasantly surprised to see the groom’s cake topped with none other than a Mr. and Mrs. Sasquatch.  The tables were decorated with the greenest moss I had ever seen with lots of brilliant purple and magenta orchids and so the winter, moss, Sasquatch vision had been achieved.

I could not have photographed this wedding without the help from two awesome photographers as well as good friends of mine, Gretchen Johnson and Maggie Jones.  Maggie was my side kick making sure to step in and assist or take over if I needed to rest my ever-expanding torso.  Gretchen was as always excellent in documenting the guys getting ready and grabbing the shots I have no chance of getting since I can’t be in two places at once.  Without their efforts I would not have been able to give Jessica and Matt complete coverage of their wonderful day.  Thank you Maggie and Gretchen for caring for my clients as if they were their own.
