Summer August Wedding in West Chester + Phoenixville, PA uniting Nneka, a Philly girl and Austin, a Boston gent at the Phoenixville Foundry

Nneka and Austin live in Boston, MA but decided to say their vows in front of family and friends in Southeastern Pennsylvania.  Nneka’s family resides in the Phoenixville area and attends the Church of the Holy Trinity in West Chester.

The lovely Church of the Holy Trinity was the site of the ceremony and not far from Nneka’s family home, the newly reinvigorated Phoenixville Foundry (previously the Phoenix Iron Works Foundry) hosted their celebration.

I recall pointing my long lens down the church aisle toward the bridesmaids, just as they began to enter, and being wondrously distracted by the beautiful stained glass window that illuminated as the sun broke through the surrounding rain clouds.  The guests stood up as the gorgeous and stunning bride, Nneka, began to make her way down the aisle, arm in arm with her father,  toward her soon-to-be (and anxious)  husband, Austin.

Father and future son-in-law shook hands, dad gave daughter a kiss, and then joined the happy couple.

The Reverend Dr. Barbara from the Grace Episcopal Church (Austin’s family’s church) traveled all the way from Massachusetts to officiate their wedding.  (She is a super neat lady.  I was fortunate to spend a little time with her as we both traveled over to the Phoenixville Foundry together.)  To incorporate Nneka’s Nigerian background, their friend, Zain, read John 4:7-16 in Igbo, a native language of Nigeria.  Another pretty awesome ceremonial touch  was the gorgeous voice of Nneka’s sister, Chimdi, as she sang Victor Young/Edward Hyman’s “When I Fall in Love.”

This was followed by their official marriage vows and one of my favorite moments as they walked up the aisle to the awesome voice of John Legend singing “All of Me,” through the church speakers.

The church garden area made the perfect location to get a couple of bridal party shots, as well as some intimate images of just Nneka and Austin.  These images are some of my all time favorites as they exhibit a genuine and natural feel of relaxed portraiture.

It was on to the Phoenixville Foundry…with the rain clouds deciding to join in on the outdoor photo session we had planned. If it weren’t for the awesome Gretchen Johnson, my side kick and second shooter extraordinaire helping out with a bit of the umbrella action, the images on the Phoenix Column Truss Bridge wouldn’t exist.  Thank you, Gretchen!

The inside of the foundry was a pretty spectacular space.  It is very open and full of light.  The salmon and grey table settings were a very elegant color pairing.  Nneka and Austin’s table numbers were super cute as each contained a childhood photograph of both of them.

I managed to grab the couple from their rounds during the cocktail hour to get a shot in the dining room.  It isn’t a true photojournalistic moment as I directed them to that particular space; however, they fell right into the each other’s arms as if I wasn’t even around.  This made for a very real moment in spite of the initial set up.

The terrace or mezzanine level where the cocktail hour was held overlooked the dance floor.  I took advantage of this space during their first dance as it provided a bird’s eye view on all the excitement.

I knew I couldn’t leave the foundry without at least one image of the couple on the mezzanine amidst the steel beams.  This image was instantly one of my favorites, as again, Nneka and Austin were completely natural as they sweetly embraced among the massive, complex structures.

A very special and unique part of their day was their dress change in the middle of the Reception.  Both Nneka and Austin changed into traditional Nigerian dress called the “aso-ebi.”  The colors were tailored to their wedding colors of navy and salmon.

The night was coming to an end, but we had to squeeze in one more important photo.  It was a last minute addition and put me on the spot as it required the location of a bench.  As luck would have it, in the Visitor Center at the other side of the foundry, was a small bench.  Austin pulled up an image on his phone and we did the best we could to emulate.  It took a few tries, but I believe Austin and Nneka nailed it and made it their own.

Nneka and Austin, it was a blast working for you and your families.  Thank you for trusting the artist in me to come through in providing you with memories that will live on forever.  It was a true honor.

Huge thank you to my home girl Gretchen Johnson for all her efforts in making sure Nneka and Austin got complete documentation of their big day.

A special thank you to my sweet mother, Suzy Zeigler.  She possesses a gift of understanding the English language much better than I do so she kindly polished this piece up to make it shine.  Love ya Mom!

Just a little side note on a special piece of artwork.  Nneka and Austin didn’t want to go with the sign-in/reception book for their wedding guests.  Together we came up with this wedding tree, a one-of-a-kind artwork.

It is primarily based off of one of the photos I took of them at the Boston Public Gardens during their engagement session.  (If you missed that post totally go take a peek here.) Guests signed in on each leaf or around the tree.  I even used part of it to nail a shot of their rings (Musto’s Jeweler).

It was a really fun challenge for me to design something completely unique as their guest memorial.  They could have very easily gone on Etsy to grab a designed wedding tree from a top designer/illustrator but they laid out the challenge for me.  This is the bonus when you hire me…having the fine art background, I can utilize many more special talents to give you one-of-a-kind pieces to commemorate one of the biggest days of your life.

Shout out to the Master’s Baker for their amazing cake!  Cake is a weakness of mine.  If at the end of a wedding there are slices sitting by the exit, I can’t resist grabbing a piece.  I have photographed a couple of cakes done by Master Baker over the years.  Their attention to detail paired with a scrumptious fluffiness of cake and icing is pretty hard to rival.  I had fun photographing this one for sure.

As always, I like to showcase the keepsake box I create for each of my clients.  I really love giving a simple work of craftsmanship new life and purpose.  Each box is uniquely designed based on a couple’s wedding colors and decor.
